Research foundation

1. What type of search behaviour did we analyse?

The search queries we focused on three stages of search intent, from problem awareness to solution awareness.

  • Awareness search queries:

    relate to users who are problem aware, but not aware of the solution

    (e.g. "How can I track my workout performance?")
  • Consideration search queries:

    describe searches where the user is comparing potential solutions

    (e.g. "Are the smartwatches better at tracking workout performance than the smart rings?")
  • Decision search queries:

    relate to specific searches where the user knows the solution they want to pick, but they are still investigating specific details before choosing a vendor/brand

    (e.g. "What are the best smartwatches focused on tracking climbing performance?")

In total, we ran 12 queries across 39 business categories, every day for 7 days, to capture AI answers and source links included in the AI answer at each intent stage.

2. What methods did we apply to uncover prompts buyers type in AI Search engines?

We used two techniques to uncover queries with high accuracy and tied them back to search intent.

Reddit mining:
We first analyzed the most engaged posts and comments to learn how people ask questions and talk about a certain problem/solution.
Audience research:
We then conducted Voice of Customer research for each of the 39 business categories included in the study. Each voice of customer research was based analysing 700 to 1000 customer reviews.

The result?

A dataset of 468 queries grounded in real-world conversations, customer verbatim and intent. We run daily 468 queries on ChatGPT and the same 468 queries on Perplexity as well. That gave us 6,552 AI answers and 8,185 unique source links to analyse in detail and compile the statistics you see above.
